On Oct. 16, Jackson State University suspended classes after a student was fatally shot on campus. Jaylen Burns, a 21-year-old industrial technology major from Chicago, was taken to the hospital from campus following reports of gunfire on Oct. 15 at an apartment complex on campus.
Authorities have not identified a suspect in the ongoing investigation, which includes the Jackson Police Department and Capitol Police.
JSU’s Acting President Elayne Hayes-Anthony said in a statement, “We grieve the tragic loss of his life due to this senseless act of violence.”
This is the second shooting connected to JSU over the homecoming weekend. One person suffered a bullet wound to the leg from gunshots fired at JSU on Oct. 14.
