JetZero cites state budget turbulence, gets adjustment on $1.5B incentive

(The Center Square) – JetZero, two weeks from its formal groundbreaking ceremony, gained a soft cushion to meeting requirements for its $1.5 billion incentive package provided by North Carolina taxpayers because the state is without a budget.

In last week’s meeting of the Economic Investment Committee, a May 19 request from the Long Beach, Calif., company was granted. The manufacturer will still plan to create 3,020 jobs by the end of 2029 but will not have to create any – rather than 1,050 planned – in 2027. Hiring will begin in 2028.

JetZero in June of last year said it would build a $4.7 billion facility, its first factory, in Greensboro that would eventually employ more than 14,000. The North Carolina Economic Investment Committee approved $1.57 billion in incentives, including a potential Job Development Investment Grant of as much as $1.02 billion over 37 years.

Guilford County commissioners kicked in another $76 million of incentives.

JetZero requested the change to the structure of its incentive deal citing state money for infrastructure work. North Carolina, by law, is to implement a two-year budget on July 1 of odd-numbered years; Tuesday represented Day 337 late, though last month respective General Assembly chamber leaders said a framework was in place, major hurdles cleared and the spending plan would come forth this month.
