Judge Blocks Trump Administration Effort to End Ethiopian TPS

(AURN News) — A federal judge in Boston blocked the Trump administration’s effort to end temporary protected status for Ethiopian nationals, finding the administration violated federal law.

U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy ruled that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem failed to follow the law in two critical ways.

First, she did not properly consult with other government agencies before terminating the protection. The court found just two brief emails in which the State Department essentially rubber-stamped a decision that appeared already made.

Second, the judge found the termination was pretextual. Evidence shows the administration had already decided to end the program before reviewing whether dangerous conditions in Ethiopia still exist.

The judge noted that since taking office, the administration has terminated TPS for 12 countries — every one it reviewed.
