Judge Demands DOJ Release Video in Case of N.J. Rep. LaMonica McIver

(AURN News) — A federal judge in Newark has ordered prosecutors to hand over new evidence in the case of Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., who is accused of assaulting immigration agents earlier this year.

According to The New York Times, Judge Jamel K. Semper directed the Justice Department to release all video recordings from the May incident outside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center and to remove federal social media posts he called “fact free.”

McIver, who represents Newark, was charged with allegedly striking two agents while intervening during the brief detention of Mayor Ras J. Baraka.

She pleaded not guilty and maintains her innocence, saying she was conducting an authorized oversight visit.

Her defense argues the charges are politically motivated, while supporters call the prosecution an attempt to silence a Black woman in office.
