(The Center Square) — Meta’s $10 billion investment to build its largest artificial intelligence-optimized data center in Richland Parish has earned the 2024 Platinum Deal of the Year from Business Facilities Magazine.
This recognition marks the first time Louisiana has won the magazine’s highest honor, which celebrates transformative capital investments across the United States.
The data center, which represents the largest private investment in North Louisiana’s history, stood out for its massive scale, job creation, and high wages. The 4 million square foot facility will create over 5,000 construction jobs at its peak, 500 permanent positions, and thousands of indirect jobs, with average salaries exceeding 150% of the state’s per capita income.
Gov. Jeff Landry called the recognition a testament to Louisiana’s growing appeal for high-tech industries. “This is more than an award—it’s a statement about Louisiana’s potential,” Landry said. “We’re creating jobs, modernizing infrastructure, and ensuring rural areas are part of the state’s future as a global technology leader.”
The state’s comprehensive strategy to secure the project played a significant role in the award. Business Facilities highlighted Louisiana’s new data center incentive program, education partnerships, and robust local infrastructure, including upgraded power and water systems, as key factors in setting the state apart from competitors.
“State legislation reducing sales tax liability on data center equipment purchases, partnerships with educational institutions, and availability of utilities were among the factors critical in Meta choosing to locate in Louisiana,” the magazine wrote.
“This recognition sends a powerful message to CEOs and site selectors worldwide: Louisiana is not just competing; we’re leading,” said Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois in a news release.
Meta’s commitment to the region goes beyond the walls of the data center. The company has pledged over $200 million to improve local roads and water systems, ensuring long-term benefits for surrounding communities.
It will also launch a Community Action Grants Program to support local schools and organizations, with a focus on education in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Superintendent Sheldon Jones of the Richland Parish School System said Meta’s partnership offers “transformative opportunities” for students, including internships, apprenticeships, and training in emerging technologies.
Louisiana Delta Community College in Monroe is developing a curriculum to prepare students for careers in artificial intelligence and data centers, further boosting the state’s tech workforce pipeline.
The data center will operate entirely on clean, renewable energy, with Meta partnering with Entergy to add 1,500 megawatts of new renewable power to the grid. The facility is also designed to prioritize water efficiency, aligning with Meta’s global sustainability goal of becoming water-positive by 2030.
“This isn’t just about building a facility; it’s about strengthening communities and creating real opportunities,” said Kevin Janda, Meta’s director of Data Center Infrastructure.
State leaders have praised the project as a once-in-a-generation investment. U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, R-La., described it as “a day that transforms Louisiana,” while U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., credited broadband expansion and federal infrastructure funding for helping make Louisiana a competitive destination for such significant investments.
