Medical Notes: Curing HIV, Investing in Standing Desks, and the Right Fiber for Weight Loss

There are already medications available to treat HIV, but now there might be a cure

A study published in the journal Brain reveals that an experimental drug can clear previously infected blood cells from the brain that can’t be accessed by other HIV treatments. This option was originally created for cancer and can decrease the virus by 99 percent. The researchers plan to combine this new method with other HIV medication to figure out how to eradicate it from not just the brain, but the whole body. (Tulane University)

There’s a new way to lose weight… and it doesn’t involve medication

A type of fiber found in foods like oatmeal and mushrooms can help aid weight loss. It’s called beta-glucan. A new study in The Journal of Nutrition found that it’s the only type of fiber that can reduce body fat and help regulate blood sugar. This fiber could also help with gut and organ health.. Kids from low-income households were more than 10 percent healthier when eating school lunches rather than food from home. (University of Arizona)

Standing at your desk might fix your back pain

Research in IISE Transactions on Occupational Ergonomics and Human Factors finds that 80 percent of people have back pain from sitting at work. That number dropped to 50 percent when people work at an elbow height desk. The researchers say standing desks can help fix health issues that come from sedentary work. (Texas A&M University)
