Honey bees may make an appearance at your next doctor’s visit

Much like dogs, insects have an incredible sense of smell. So much so that new research in BioSensors and BioElectronics put bees to the test. The animals were exposed to both healthy and cancerous human breath. Not only were the honey bees able to tell which sample had cancer, but they could also distinguish the different types of cancer. Scientists are now trying to create sensors that mimic the honey bee’s sense of smell. (Michigan State University)

Should all kids be sent to preschool?

Early education has become a foundational component of America’s public policy. But how much does preschool actually impact success later in life? A study published in Science has found that kids show academic benefits immediately following preschool, but the long-term results vary. The research reveals the need for updated investigations that show how publicly funded schools can modernize for more positive, lasting outcomes. (UC Irvine)

Can dreams help us process negative emotions?

According to a new study published in Scientific Reports, people who have positive dreams tend to have more encouraging emotions throughout the day. The more positive people’s dreams, the more positive their emotions while awake. When troubling thoughts pop up, dreaming can help calm our reactions to them. Scientists also theorize that dreams help us process those emotions, making them less severe. (UC Irvine)

The American diet is improving, but that’s not good enough

Between 1999 and 2020, we’ve seen a modest improvement in the diet quality of US adults. However, we continue to face a national nutrition crisis — which is extremely costly. Research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows that we need to fix the health inequities before we can make real progress in creating a healthier nation. (Tufts University)
