Medical Notes: How Energy Drinks May Worsen Your Cancer, A Non-Invasive Treatment For Seizures, And How To Fight Against Procrastination

Are energy drinks making you sick?

Scientists have discovered that taurine, an amino acid added to these products, fuels leukemia stem cells. In fact, a recent study in the journal Cell Death And Disease shows that as it feeds the cancer, it becomes less available for healthy cells to use. In mice, this led to weaker bones. While taurine itself is important for specific functions in our body, it may be harmful for people with certain types of cancers.

A new treatment for seizures may soon be possible without the need for invasive brain surgery.

A study published in ACS Chemical Neuroscience details a non-surgical method that uses focuses ultrasound to reach areas of the brain responsible for epilepsy. By targeting these specific neural circuits, researchers were able to suppress seizure activity in animal models. This breakthrough offers a potential lifeline for the millions of patients whose seizures do not respond to traditional medication but who are hesitant to undergo traditional surgery.

Good news for sugar addicts! Scientists have created a healthier sweetener using Tagatose.

It’s a rare type of sugar found in some fruit and dairy products that researchers have been able to bio-synthetically produce. It’s nearly just as sweet as table sugar but has 60 percent fewer calories. Research also suggests it reduces the growth of some cavity-causing bacteria and has probiotic effects for the gut.

How to fight against procrastination.

Research published in BMC Psychology highlights a simple two-minute reflection exercise as a powerful way to break the cycle of delay. The study found that breaking down the task into smaller sub-goals and adding a quick reward for each one can significantly reduce procrastination.
