Medical Notes: How Losing Weight Can Improve Brain Function, The Medicinal Properties Of Coral Reefs, And A New Type Of Liver Cell

Your weight is affecting how well your brain works.

Cognitive decline happens to all of us as we age, but normally the changes are subtle. A study published in the Journal Of Neurology has found that having a higher body mass index over time is linked to a more rapid decline in memory and executive functions like concentrating and organizing. Thankfully, it may be reversible. People who successfully managed their weight saw a significant slowing of cognitive decline in as little as two years.

A newly discovered type of cell could be a powerful defense against liver disease.

Research published in The Journal Of Clinical Investigation has identified a unique cluster of liver cells that only appear in livers affected by ‘mash’, a dangerous condition that leads cancer. Scientists found that these cells activate a gene that helps the organ adapt to metabolic stress. This discovery offers a new therapeutic target to protect the liver from chronic damage and stop the progression of metabolic disease.

How coral reefs could become the next biggest pharmaceutical product.

Researchers have discovered more than three thousand new species of bacteria living exclusively within coral micro-biomes. These bacteria produce a lot of different types of small molecules used to grow, communicate, and defend themselves. Scientists believe these molecules can be used for new drugs, as well as industrial products like laundry detergent and concrete. the research is published in the Journal Nature.

Many beauty products marketed as ‘clean’ have a dangerous secret missing from their labels.

70 percent of products tested in a recent study listed ‘fragrance’ as an ingredient, which can hide endocrine-disrupting chemicals. This study highlights a critical gap in cosmetic regulation and underscores the need for better labeling. the research is published in the Journal Of Exposure Science And Environmental Epidemiology.
