Medical Notes: How The Food Industry Exploits Additive Loopholes, The Medical Magic Of Fish Oil, And Why You Should Cry More Often

Some food additives are extremely harmful, so why are they allowed in our products?

The FDA regulates the American food supply, but new research shows that it’s more hands-off when it comes to certain ingredients. A study in The American Journal Of Public Health shows that the food industry is allowed to independently decide which added substances should be generally recognized as safe. They also don’t have to report the quote unquote ‘safe’ ingredients to the FDA, which means that many are added without government oversight.

Here are some beauty products to skip if you’re pregnant.

Phenols and parabens are common chemicals in products like shampoos, lotions, and sunscreens. New research shows that these chemicals could increase the risk of hypertension and high blood pressure during pregnancy. The findings are published in Environmental Health Perspectives.

Are you eating enough fish?

Many people have a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol. Thankfully, the cure may currently be swimming in our oceans. A new study in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition reveals that fish oil supplements lower the genetic risk of high total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride levels. These supplements should be used in addition to a healthy diet and exercise.

Have you cried today?

Doctor Claudia O’Brien, an ophthalmologist, says that crying is a fundamental part of human behavior. Experts have identified three types of tears – ones that line our eyes and keep them moist, reflex tears caused by irritants, and emotional tears. However, it is possible to cry
without
tears.
