Medical Notes: The Best Age To Prevent Brain Decline, Lead Is Leaching Into Our Air, And How Hotter Days Reduce Birth Rates

Polluted air is killing our children.

Worldwide industrial emissions have put a substantial amount of lead in the air – which has been linked to rising blood lead levels in kids across the globe. A National Bureau Of Economic Research working paper has revealed a significant relation to these emissions and infant deaths. The researchers hope these findings encourage more investments in reducing air lead emissions. (Carnegie Mellon University)

Microplastics may be worsening antibiotic resistance.

New research reveals that bacteria that’s exposed to microplastics become resistant to multiple types of medications. Scientists are especially concerned about high-density, impoverished communities where infections spread quickly. The plastic supercharges a biofilm created by bacteria that protects it from invaders. The study is published in the journal Applied And Environmental Microbiology. (Boston University)

It’s not too late to improve your brain health.

New research in PNAS shows that brain aging accelerates in mid-life, around 45 years old. This insight offers new strategies for preventing age-related brain decline. The changes during mid-life are both preventable and reversible. Scientists hope this information will soon lead to strategies for maintaining cognitive health. (Stony Brook University)

Do hotter days reduce birthrates?

Global warming may be threatening earth’s biodiversity, according to a new experiment in the journal Ecology. Rising temperatures lead to increased competition, which has historically been followed by population crashes. The study found that for every twelve degrees increase, competition doubled and led to a 50 percent population decline at the highest tested temperature. Many animal species are at risk of being affected, some may even face extinction. (Rice University)
