Medical Notes: The Brain Differences In Men And Women, Memories Can Be Made In The Kidney, and Why Hockey Is Bad For Your Health

AI reveals a new understanding of the human brain.

Certain brain conditions, like multiple sclerosis and migraines, affect men and women at different rates and severity. To help find the underlying reason, researchers used AI to analyze brain scans. It was able to spot structural patterns and differences between the brains of men and women that are invisible to the human eye. Most of the variations were located in the white matter. The research is published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Memories aren’t only in your head.

Much like the neurons in our brain, cells from the kidney and nerve tissue can also make memories. This occurs through spaced out repetition of patterns. This finding offers a new avenue to study memory, and potentially treat related diseases. The research is published in the journal Nature Communications.

Hockey is bad for your health.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is an incurable brain disease that develops after repeated head trauma. It’s gained a lot of publicity with football players, but a new study shows that other athletes are at risk as well. Research in the journal Jama reveals that the odds of having CTE increase by 34 percent for each year of ice hockey played. The risk for other severe diseases increases as well.
