Medical Notes: The Hidden Dangers Of Your Vape, When To Choose Weightlifting Over Cardio, And How To Get More Fiber In Your Diet

The hidden dangers of your vape.

While e-cigarettes are marketed as a less-harmful option to the traditional cigarette, you’re still most likely causing long-term damage to your body. New research in the journal Frontiers In Toxicology reports that two toxic chemicals are generated when vaping liquids are heated. Both toxins disrupt essential cell function and can cause long-term injury to your lungs.

Which exercise is best for your health?

You may think running is the best choice for getting healthy, but when it comes to preventing diabetes that may not be the case. Early research in the Journal Of Sport And Health Science reveals that resistance exercises, like weightlifting, are more effective at improving glucose tolerance and lowering insulin resistance. It was also better at reducing sub-cutaneous and visceral fat compared to cardio.

Why you may want to spend more time on your phone.

Researchers are looking at creating an app that passively collects user data as a tool to assess mental health. A paper published in Jama Network Open reveals that it’s possible to link a user’s online behaviors with both specific and non-specific symptoms relating to mental health conditions. While this won’t be able to replace treatment, it will help clinicians make better diagnoses and treatment recommendations.

You need to be eating more fiber – here’s how.

While protein has become a hot topic recently, fiber is a nutrient that’s just as important – if not more. It helps digestion, promotes a healthy gut microbiome, and reduces your risk of developing cancer. The USDA recommends between 22 and 34 grams of fiber each day. Fiber supplements can help, but consuming real foods like apples, avocados, beans, and broccoli is the best option.
