Medical Notes: Your Humidifier Is Making You Sick, Global Warming Is Messing Up Your Gut, And Do Cancer Vaccines Work?

Would you take a cancer vaccine?

They were first approved for prostate cancer in 2010, but little progress has been made since. Now, researchers have created a vaccine that helps the immune system better recognize tumor molecules. This method helps prevent the cancer from ever returning after it’s been defeated. In animal models, the new vaccine works against various types of tumors including melanoma and breast cancer. The research is published in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering. (Tufts University)

Your humidifier could be making you sick.

Many people use these products to relieve dry throats and stuffy noses, but experts say they can also release toxic metals into the air. To combat this health risk, fill up your humidifier with distilled or reverse osmosis water, which have very few minerals. Another way to maintain good air quality is to increase the room’s ventilation by opening windows. (Virginia Tech)

Is global warming bad for your gut?

Heat stress can create changes in the gut microbiome that make us more susceptible to harmful bacteria. It can also make our bodies less effective at absorbing vital nutrients that feed our gut. The findings are published in the Lancet Planetary Health. (Michigan State University)
