Memorial Day: Trump to honor fallen troops in Arlington National Cemetery visit

President Donald Trump is expected to commemorate Memorial Day Monday with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where he will honor those men and women who died while serving their country.

The Center Square’s Morgan Sweeney will be among a small group of White House pool reporters who will cover the ceremony live from the cemetery, where more than 400,000 people are buried, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice serving their country.

In a proclamation issued Saturday, Trump requested government officials and individual citizens fly American flags at half-staff Monday and to unite in prayer for peace.

“Memorial Day is a sacred day of remembrance, reverence, and gratitude for the brave patriots who have laid down their lives in service to our great Nation,” the proclamation reads. “Throughout our history, brave men and women have been called to defend the cause of liberty on foreign shores in defense of our homeland. Their noble sacrifices are marked by flag-draped coffins and the silent sorrows of those left behind. We must never forget those who have given everything for our country.”

The proclamation continues: “We are eternally indebted to our Nation’s fallen heroes. On this solemn day, as we honor their sacrifice, the First Lady and I ask all citizens to join us in prayer that Almighty God may comfort those who mourn, grant protection to all who serve, and bring blessed peace to the world.”
