Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, Trailblazing Black Transgender Activist, Dies at 78

(AURN News) — Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a Black transgender woman and revolutionary LGBTQ+ leader, has died at 78. She passed away on Oct. 13 at her home in Little Rock, Arkansas, according to the Bay Area Reporter.

For more than five decades, Miss Major fought for the rights and survival of trans people — especially Black trans women, incarcerated trans women, and those facing police brutality.

At 22, she witnessed the first night of the 1969 Stonewall uprising. She survived Bellevue psychiatric hospital, Attica Prison, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and sex work — and helped build the drag ball scene.

She was also featured in the documentary “Major!” Her legacy helped shape the modern LGBTQ+ movement.

Rest in power, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy.
