A federal judge has cleared the way for Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, to access Treasury’s payment systems, which move trillions of dollars and contain private data on millions of Americans.
In February, U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas halted DOGE’s operations, criticizing the Trump administration‘s rollout as chaotic and haphazard, and citing serious privacy risks. But in an eight-page ruling Tuesday, she cleared the way, provided every new DOGE staffer completes Treasury data security training.
DOGE will no longer need to seek the judge’s permission for each hire. The administration’s new vetting process now serves as the green light.
DOGE insiders have even attempted to freeze funding for programs they oppose — including Social Security and Medicaid — before legal pushback from 19 Democratic attorneys general led by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
They called it an illegal power grab, but now they’ve at least secured assurances that training safeguards are in place.
