NE foundation named for Warren Buffett’s 1st wife among top Media Matters donors

(The Center Square) – Foundation formed by Warren Buffett’s first wife is one of the biggest donors to Media Matters for America

Who funds Media Matters for America? The progressive activist group receives funding from a myriad of Democratic donors, but one of its biggest backers is a foundation founded by Warren Buffett’s first wife.

As a charitable organization, Media Matters does not have to disclose its donors publicly but accidentally did so in a public filing to the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office in November 2023.

The list revealed that the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation contributed $1,751,199 to Media Matters in 2022, making it the fourth-largest contributor to the organization, according to documents published by the Washington Free Beacon.

Thompson Buffett was married to Warren Buffett, one of the world’s richest men, from 1952 until she died in 2004. However, by the end of their marriage, they had an open marriage where Warren Buffett was dating another woman, according to Business Insider.

The organization named for her, based in Nebraska, pushes for birth control and abortion across the world.

“The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, based in Omaha, Nebraska, is a private grantmaking foundation and one of the largest global supporters of sexual reproductive health,” a description of the foundation on Idealist said. “We work towards a world in which every woman controls her reproduction and all reproductive decisions are treated with dignity and respect.”

Media Matters raised $16.5 million in 2022, according to the Free Beacon report.

In recent years, it has organized advertising boycotts against conservative media outlets, including Fox News. Additionally, X, formerly known as Twitter, is suing Media Matters for defamation after it launched a pressure campaign in hopes of getting companies to stop advertising on the social media network.
