(The Center Square) – Virginians are ringing in the new year with steady gas prices greeting drivers at the pump.
Across Virginia, the average price for regular gasoline was $2.73 per gallon as of Wednesday afternoon, according to GasBuddy data. Prices have shown only minor day-to-day movement and remain lower than they were during the same period last year.
That steady trend is showing up across several parts of the commonwealth. In Richmond, gas prices were averaging as low as $2.29 per gallon at several stations. Prices in Roanoke were running closer to $2.31 per gallon, while drivers in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia were generally seeing prices in the low-to-mid $2.30 range.
Maryland drivers are seeing a similar pattern. The statewide average price for regular gas in Maryland was $2.79 per gallon, slightly higher than in Virginia but still below $3 per gallon.
Prices in the Baltimore-area suburbs, including Catonsville and Owings Mills, ranged from about $2.35 to $2.37 per gallon, while prices in Southern Maryland, including the Waldorf area, were closer to $2.39 per gallon.
Nationally, the average price for regular gasoline was $2.81 per gallon, according to the data.
Gas prices across much of the Mid-Atlantic have followed a similar pattern, with most states seeing relatively modest price changes in recent weeks.
GasBuddy’s year-end review found that 2025 was one of the most stable years for gas prices in nearly two decades, with fuel costs staying within a tighter range than in many recent years and avoiding prolonged spikes.
For now, gas prices are starting the year with little change from recent weeks.
