North Carolina Republicans Advance Redistricting Plan Critics Call Discriminatory

(AURN News) — Republican lawmakers in North Carolina have approved a new congressional map that could add another GOP seat in the U.S. House, according to The New York Times.

The measure passed the North Carolina Senate and is expected to clear the House soon. Gov. Josh Stein, a Democrat, cannot veto redistricting under the state constitution.

Critics say the plan targets the 1st Congressional District, held by Rep. Don Davis (D-N.C.), by adding conservative-leaning counties and dividing majority-Black areas.

Republicans argue the map reflects “the will of the people.” Civil rights groups call the move part of a larger pattern of voter suppression that has defined North Carolina’s history — from poll taxes and literacy tests to recent voter ID laws and restrictions struck down by federal courts.
