(The Center Square) – Republican Clay Fuller won the 14th Congressional District seat from Georgia on Tuesday night by 12% against an opponent he could see again in November.
Fuller took 55.9% of the vote to Democrat Shawn Harris’ 44.1%. Harris won 35% of the vote in a November 2024 contest against Marjorie Taylor Greene, who resigned her post in January after a public feud with second-term Republican President Donald Trump.
Fuller will serve the remainder of Greene’s term.
Harris won the majority in Cobb County, but had at least 30% of the vote in the remaining counties, except Murray County, where he only garnered 24.12%, according to results from the Office of Secretary of State. He was closest to Fuller in Paulding County, where he received 49.46% of the vote to Fuller’s 50.56%. Fuller had the most votes in Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties.
“We came up short tonight, but look at what we built,” Harris said on social media. “This was a fair, hard-fought race, and we’re closer than ever. If we show up and make our voices heard, we win.”
Harris is the only Democrat vying for a two-year term in Congress. Fuller is facing many of the same candidates in the May 19 primary. Former state Sen. Colton Moore, James Edward Tully Jr., Brian Stover, Nicky Lama, Eric Brad Cunningham, Reagan Christane Box, Star Black, Thomas Gray and Beau Brown are also in the field.
Fuller thanked Trump for his endorsement.
“The results tonight are clear: Northwest Georgia stands with MAGA and demands a fighter on Capitol Hill defending the America First agenda,” Fuller wrote on social media.
Three legislative elections were also decided on Tuesday. Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas, a Republican, defeated Democrat Jack Zibluk for the state Senate seat formerly held by Moore. The district encompasses Dade, Walker, Catoosa and Chattooga counties and parts of Floyd County.
Venola Mason defeated Kelly Kautz for the District 94 post in the House of Representatives. Both are Democrats. The seat that covers portions of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties was held by Rep. Karen Bennett, who resigned after she was indicted on a charge related to federal pandemic unemployment fraud.
For the District 130 House seat, Democrat Sheila Clark Nelson won over Republican Thomas McAdams with nearly 71% of the vote to McAdams 29%. Former Rep. Lynn Heffner of Augusta resigned to address damage to her home from Hurricane Helene.
