Ogles proposal would allow Trump to run for a third time

(The Center Square) – U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles has filed a proposal for a constitutional amendment that would allow presidents to serve for third terms.

If approved by voters, it would allow President Donald Trump to run for a third term, which the Tennessee Republican said is the motivation behind the bill.

“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles said. “He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

The resolution bars any president who served two consecutive terms from seeking a third. That would keep living Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush from running again.

Two-thirds of the House and Senate must approve changes to constitutional amendments. Two-thirds of state legislatures can also call for a constitutional convention to make changes. Three-fourths of the states have to ratify the amendment, or it can be done in a constitutional convention.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the only president to have served more than two terms. He was elected in 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. Roosevelt died in 1945, just months after being sworn in for his fourth term.

The 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951, limiting presidents to two terms.
