Ohio sports betting wagers rise significantly in September

(The Center Square) – Ohio gamblers welcomed an entire month of football by betting nearly twice as much as they did in August.

According to industry analysts, September was one of the highest months for wagers since the state legalized sports betting in January.

“September was one of the busiest months in the short history of Ohio sports betting,” PlayOhio Managing Editor Steve Schult said. “We should continue to see increases into October with the addition of NHL and NBA games to the betting slate, and the ability to sustain these numbers will be indicative of how big the Ohio market can be.”

In September, Ohio bettors placed more than $690 million in wagers, well above August’s $378 million total, according to figures released by the Ohio Lottery Commission. It was the third-highest betting month, ranking only between January’s launch month and March for March Madness.

Mobile sports betting in September rose 83.3% from August, and retail betting was up more than 50%. Total sports betting revenue finished at $81.6 million, up 100% from August.

The state collected $16.4 million in total taxes.

The upswing shows a strong market in the state, according to BetOhio analysts.

“Revenue was also up to the tune of just over 100%, doubling last month’s gross of $40 million. This upward trajectory should continue through the fall and into the winter, but this strong of a rebound after a hard summer is a good indicator of market resilience,” BetOhio said.
