(The Center Square) – Close to a month from the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons, Ohio sports betting numbers continue to fall.
According to figures released by the Casino Control Commission, total sports betting in June was down more than 13% from May, while revenues and taxes dropped by nearly 25%.
Compared to a year ago, the numbers showed a nearly 50% increase.
The gambling website BetOhio called the dip seasonal and expects numbers to rise as the football season begins.
“Ohio sports betting skyrocketed over the past year. Ohio’s June sports betting handle experienced a month-over-month decline of 13.4%, which was expected given the seasonal nature of sports even with The Memorial PGA tournament taking place in Dublin during June,” BetOhio analysts said. “However, the 46.1% year-over-year increase is a testament to the state’s burgeoning sports betting market and its potential for continued growth.”
Overall, the total sports handling of $530.6 million was down 13.4%, while the mobile handle of $516.1 million was also down 13.1%. June’s total revenue was 23.9% lower than May at $51.2 million.
The state took in $10.3 million in taxes, a 23.9% dip from May.
“The 23.9% fall in revenue and taxes is certainly a hit for state coffers, but not cause for alarm,” BetOhio said. “It’s crucial to remember that the foundation for sustained growth is already in place for Ohio, and with the promise of a thrilling football season on the horizon, the market is primed to rebound strongly.”
