On This Day in 1807: Trailblazing Actor Ira Frederick Aldridge Is Born

(AURN News) — On July 24, 1807, acclaimed Black Shakespearean actor Ira Frederick Aldridge was born.

Although accounts differ on whether his birthplace was New York, Maryland or Africa, his extraordinary talent is undisputed.

Educated at New York’s African Free School and Schenectady College, Aldridge developed an early passion for theater and performed as a teenager with the African Grove Theatre, one of the nation’s first Black-managed theaters.

After studying at the University of Glasgow, he made his London stage debut in 1825 as Prince Oroonoko in “The Revolt of Surinam.”

Aldridge later earned international acclaim as Othello at Covent Garden and also performed “King Lear” and “Macbeth.”

He toured throughout Europe, including Britain, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Austria and Russia.

Aldridge died at 59 while touring Poland, where he received a state funeral, cementing his legacy as a groundbreaking global theatrical pioneer.
