On This Day: Sammy Davis Jr., Icon of Stage and Screen, Is Born

(AURN News) — On this day in 1925, Sammy Davis Jr. was born — a multitalented entertainer who became one of the most influential performers of the 20th century.
Davis began performing in vaudeville as a child and rose to international fame as a singer, dancer and actor. Over the course of his career, he conquered Broadway, Las Vegas, television, film and the recording industry, becoming a true global star.
He was a central member of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack and appeared in major films, including the 1960 classic Ocean’s 11.

His interracial marriage in 1960 to Swedish actress May Britt sparked widespread backlash during a period when such unions were still illegal in many states. Despite public pressure, the couple remained together for eight years.
Davis’ celebrated career earned him NAACP Image Awards, a Golden Globe and ultimately a Kennedy Center Honor.
Sammy Davis Jr. died in 1990 at age 64, leaving behind a legacy of barrier-breaking artistry and cultural impact.
