(The Center Square) – Unconnected shootings at two football games hosted by historically black colleges and universities in Mississippi left an adult dead and a child sent to the hospital with injuries on Saturday.
At Alcorn State University, one person was killed and two injured in the evening shooting. Lawmen said no arrest had been made.
It was homecoming for Alcorn State against Lincoln University.
At Jackson State University, a shooting near a tailgate section sent a child to the hospital with an injury to the abdomen area. About an hour earlier, there were reports of cars damaged by fire near the stadium.
Jackson State had a crowd of about 44,000 on hand for its homecoming football game against Alabama State.
Three small-town communities in the state were dealing with gunfire at or after football games the night before.
