Petersen files paperwork to run in Arizona attorney general race

(The Center Square) – Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen is interested in running for state attorney general in 2026.

Petersen filed a statement of interest Sunday, which allows him to collect signatures for a nominating petition to end up on the ballot for the August 2026 Republican primary, KJZZ first reported.

Rodney Glassman, who ran for the position in 2022, also filed paperwork in December to run. Whoever wins the primary will presumably take on Attorney General Kris Mayes in the general election. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell is also speculated to be a potential candidate.

Mayes narrowly defeated Republican Abe Hamadeh by 280 votes in 2022. Hamadeh is now a member of Congress representing Arizona’s Eighth Congressional District.

For statewide races, the field is starting to emerge for the midterms, as Republicans hope to retake some of the top seats. Republican Rep. Andy Biggs announced his bid for governor last week as Karrin Taylor Robson and other potential candidates mull bids for the chance to defeat Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs.
