(The Center Square) – Wisconsin’s governor and three Democratic candidates for governor have shared thoughts publicly on a shooting in Madison by a police officer.
Police say during an arrest, a suspect was killed by an officer’s gunfire. There’s video showing an altercation, a declaration the suspect has a knife, and then three shots.
Second-term Democratic Gov. Tony Evers immediately posted a statement saying in part, “There must be transparency and accountability in any investigation moving forward. We will continue to keep the loved ones and family of the individual who was killed in our hearts and prayers. His life mattered.”
State Rep. Francesca Hong, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley also posted to social media.
Hong called it an execution. Barnes called for transparency. Crowley said the images are reminders of “tragedies we have witnessed in Kenosha, Minneapolis, and far too many communities across our country.”
Police say one officer was injured during the altercation.
U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, the Republican candidate in the race, did not issue a statement about the shooting.
Wisconsin’s Department of Justice is investigating the shooting.
