Poll: GOP candidates for president, governor hold 5-point leads

(The Center Square) – Republican candidates for president and governor have five-point leads in a new poll of North Carolinians.

Former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden 43%-38% and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is ahead of Attorney General Josh Stein 35%-30% in the sampling from the High Point University Poll. The questions to 1,002 adults, 804 of which said they are registered to vote, was conducted May 2-9 and has credibility interval of +/- 3.2%, and margin of error +/- 3.1%.

The analysis had no significant changes to other polling in the state released since just before and since the state’s primary in March.

In other questions, respondents generally think the country is on the wrong track (62% to 26% on the right track), North Carolina is on the wrong track (53% to 30%), disapprove of Biden (53%-37%), and approve of Gov. Roy Cooper (49%-32%).

On a question about inflation, the survey asked about prices on everyday consumer goods and services and gave choices for prices being much higher, somewhat higher, about the same, somewhat lower, much lower, and unsure. For meat (53%) and vehicle gas (52%), 1 in 2 say it is much higher; and home electricity (43%), eggs (43%), fruits and vegetables (40%), bread (38%), clothing (38%), electronics (38%) and milk (38%) were all 2 in 5 saying much higher.

Major spending decision concerns were either “a lot” (51%) or “some” (35%) for nearly everyone; just 10% said not much at all, and 4% were unsure.

For confidence in elections accurately reflecting votes case, 69% had some level of confidence – 38% some, and 31% a lot.
