Poll: Respondents like Republicans, Trump, and worry about immigration

(The Center Square) – Republicans are favored in statewide races and the presidential election in polling of North Carolinians taken immediately after Super Tuesday.

Six hundred likely voters in the general election said America is on the wrong track (65.6%); put immigration (25%) ahead of the economy (17.8%) and abortion (12.7%) as most important issue; and gave President Joe Biden a 37.5% approval rating.

Cygnal was the firm conducting the poll for the Carolina Journal, a publication connected to the conservative-leaning John Locke Foundation, and respondents were queried on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. The margin of error is +/- 3.99%.

Asked about voting for the Legislature, generic Republican candidates (48.7%) had an edge on Democrats (45.6%). For Congress, it was 48.3%-42.5% for Republicans.

Gov. Roy Cooper’s approval rating was 48.9%.

In the presidential election, those asked favored former President Donald Trump (45.2%) over Biden (39.8%). Nearly 10% wanted someone else and more than 5% are undecided. North Carolina is being called a battleground state nationally, though the Republican nominee has taken the state every year starting in 1968 with exception of first tries by Jimmy Carter (1976) and Barack Obama (2008).

Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (43.8%) is the leader on Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein (39%) in the race for governor. For attorney general, Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop (40.6%) and Democratic U.S. Rep. Jeff Jackson (38.5%) are statistically tied within the margin of error.
