Poll shows Democratic candidates ahead in Michigan, Wisconsin

A new poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Donald Trump by 3 percentage points in two Midwest swing states.

Cook Political Report released the data Wednesday, showing Harris at 49% and Trump at 46% in both states. The survey was conducted of 406 likely voters in Michigan and 404 likely voters in Wisconsin.

The results line up with other August surveys that showed Biden’s exit from the race helped boost Democratic candidates’ ratings among voters.

Democrats also continue to lead in Michigan and Wisconsin’s U.S. Senate races, two seats Republicans are hoping to flip to take control of the Senate.

In Michigan, Democrat Rep. Elissa Slotkin leads former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers 47% to 38%, although 10% of respondents reported they are still deciding.

Both Slotkin and Rogers have emphasized the importance of the senate seat, with Rogers sharing a survey on social media that labeled Michigan’s Senate race as a tossup Thursday.

“BREAKING: @AARP has labeled Michigan as a toss-up in both the Presidential and Senate races,” Rogers posted. “[T]his race remains a dead heat!”

Wisconsin results show Incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin continues to lead Trump-endorsed Republican Eric Hovde 48% to 41%, with only 5% reporting they are still unsure.

In the state’s partisan primaries Monday, voters overwhelmingly rejected two Republican-led ballot initiatives, a move that Democrat leaders have taken as an encouraging sign for the general election.

Among all seven swing states, Harris leads in five – Arizona, Pennsylvania and North Carolina as well as Michigan and Wisconsin – and is tied with Trump in Georgia. The poll shows Trump is ahead only in Nevada.
