Raffensperger calls special election for Wiedower’s post

(The Center Square) – Voters will go to the polls on Dec. 9 to decide who will fill the Georgia House of Representatives seat vacated by Republican Marcus Wiedower.

Qualifying for the District 121 post that serves Clarke and Oconee counties begins Thursday and runs through Nov. 10, according to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

A runoff will be held on Jan. 6 if needed.

Wiedower resigned last week, saying his job as vice president of external affairs for real estate development firm Hillpointe would require more travel.

“While I’m stepping away from elected office, I look forward to remaining actively involved in our community and continuing to help tackle Georgia’s most pressing challenges, especially attainable housing through my work at Hillpointe,” Weidower said. “The opportunities ahead are exciting, and I’m eager to continue making a positive difference in people’s lives.”

The special election will be held on the same day as one for the District 23 House seat held by Mandi Ballinger, who passed away on Oct. 12. Qualifying for the District 23 seat began on Monday.

District 23 includes Cherokee County. Ballinger was a Republican.

A third special election is scheduled for Nov. 18 to fill the Senate District 35 seat vacated by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jason Esteves. The district includes parts of Cobb and Fulton counties. A runoff, if necessary, would be held Dec. 16.

Six people have qualified for the Senate election. They include Democrats Roger Bruce, who served in the Georgia House of Representatives for 22 years; consultant Erica Denise Solomon; dentist Jaha V. Howard; and John Daryl Williams. Republican Joshua Tolbert, a professional engineer and independent Corenza Morris, an insurance professor, are also in the race.
