Remembering Barry White, Born on This Day in 1944

On Sept. 12, 1944, Barry Eugene Carter — later known as Barry White — was born in Galveston, Texas.

Raised in a family of gospel singers, he showed musical talent early, playing piano on Jesse Belvin’s “Goodnight My Love” at age 11.

White became one of the most iconic bass singers and a pioneer of disco, releasing his debut solo album “I’ve Got So Much to Give” in 1973. Its hit single, “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby,” topped the R&B charts.

Though his career slowed in the 1980s, he resurged in the 1990s with “The Icon Is Love.”

A Grammy winner with more than 100 gold albums, he died in 2003.
