Rep. David Scott, Longtime Georgia Congressman, Dies at 80

(AURN News) — Rep. David Scott, a longtime Georgia congressman, has died at age 80 after more than two decades representing the state’s 13th District, according to CBS News.

First elected to Congress in 2003, Scott built a political career that began in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974 and later the Georgia state Senate.

A Democrat and member of several caucuses, including the Congressional Black Caucus, he made history as the first African American to chair the House Agriculture Committee during President Joe Biden’s administration.

He later served as ranking member after Republicans regained control of the House in 2023.

Despite recent health concerns, Scott remained popular in his district and was seeking a 13th term.
