U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted Tuesday on federal charges of allegedly interfering with immigration officers during a May 9 visit to Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center, according to the Associated Press.
The incident occurred as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested while trying to join a congressional oversight tour.
Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba said McIver “forcibly impeded” officers — charges the congresswoman called baseless.
Her attorney, Paul Fishman, described the case as “political retaliation.”
McIver faces a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.
Video footage shows McIver in a crowd appearing to make contact with an officer, though her intent is unclear.
McIver, 38, won a 2024 special election before securing a full term in November.
