Report: Florida leads nation in June foreclosure filings

(The Center Square) – Florida had more foreclosures in June than any other state, according to a new report. Real estate data company ATTOM released the latest foreclosure rates showing Florida at the top of the list.

Florida recorded 4,871 foreclosure filings in June, or one filing for every 2,106 housing units. That’s up 0.21% from early 2025 and a stark 31.22% increase from spring 2024.

The counties with the most foreclosures were Charlotte, Polk, Okeechobee, and Osceola, the report shows.

Nationally, foreclosure activity took a dip from May to June, but was still 21% higher than a year ago at over 39,300 filings. That number represents properties with default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions.

“Foreclosure starts moved lower from May while completed foreclosures increased, and both measures were higher than in June 2025,” the report said. “Overall activity remained elevated compared with last year, though the broader picture continued to reflect a market gradually returning to more typical patterns.”

South Carolina, Indiana, Nevada and Illinois followed Florida.

In Florida, there was a 24% jump in eviction foreclosure filings in March compared to March 2025. The Shimberg Center for Housing Studies, which compiles housing and demographic data, found there were 3,628 eviction foreclosures in March, which was 883 more than the same time last year.

That comes after a 19% increase in eviction foreclosures from 2024 to 2025. Florida saw just 292 eviction foreclosures in 2024 compared to over 6,800 the following year.

While the ATTOM report does not identify causes for the increase, Florida also continues to have among the nation’s highest homeowners insurance costs. Among mortgaged households, Florida had the highest median annual insurance costs in 2023 at $2,273, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

That number shrinks considerably when looking at Florida households without a mortgage. In that case, the median residents paid for property insurance was $1,442 a year.

The state is second in the nation for homeowners insurance premium volume, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

A recent NAIC report found Florida wrote $23.8 billion in homeowners insurance premiums, with the state representing just over 10% of all homeowners insurance premiums written in the U.S.

The U.S. Treasury found homeowners insurance premiums increased 8.7% faster than the rate of inflation from 2018 to 2022. During the same period of time, insurers’ costs were higher in areas with the highest expected losses from “climate-related perils.”
