Report says sobriety test led to Yager arrest

(The Center Square) – A report from the Georgia State Patrol says a sobriety test taken by Senate Republican Caucus Chairman Ken Yager led to his arrest for DUI and hit-and-run.

Troopers said they were looking for a Ford Edge with Tennessee license plates involved in a hit-and-run incident on Jekyll Island, according to a report provided by the state patrol. The vehicle was found at Jekyll Market.

“Upon arrival, emergency medical services (EMS) were already on scene evaluating an individual who had tripped and fallen. The individual was identified as Kenneth Yager, the driver of the Ford Edge,” the report said.

Troopers said they smelled alcohol on Yager’s breath.

“He admitted to being involved in a crash earlier but did not know law enforcement was en route. Mr. Yager agreed to perform a Field Sobriety Test and submit to a breathalyzer,” the report said. “As a result, Mr. Yager was arrested and charged with DUI and Hit-and-Run.”

Yager was booked into the Glynn County Jail and was released on bond.

He issued a statement on Wednesday.

“An unfortunate incident happened last night. On the advice of my attorney, I cannot discuss the particulars at this time,” Yager said. “I am and will continue to cooperate fully with authorities to bring this incident to an appropriate conclusion.”

Yager was elected to the Senate in 2006 and has served as caucus chairman since 2018, according to his website.
