WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Congressional Republicans are eyeing another fast-track budget move, and advocates are warning that millions of Americans could pay the price.
A new analysis from Sharon Parrott, president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, outlines how Republicans are using a process called reconciliation, which bypasses the Senate filibuster and requires only 50 votes.
Republicans passed sweeping cuts last year to food and health assistance. Three million people have lost SNAP benefits since July, and an estimated 15 million stand to lose health care coverage as Medicaid cuts and expired premium tax credits take full effect.
In Georgia alone, the report said more than 374,000 people dropped marketplace health coverage in just three months. In Arizona, food assistance enrollment fell by more than half.
Now, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, are signaling they want another reconciliation bill focused on affordability and additional spending cuts.
Parrott warned that low-income families could once again be in the crosshairs.
