Republicans hang on to Georgia Senate seat

(The Center Square) – Despite a strong showing by Democrat Debra Shigley in August, Republicans held on to the District 21 Senate seat.

Shigley won the most votes in the August election, but Republicans split their votes between six candidates in the district that encompasses part of Cherokee and Fulton counties.

Republicans united behind political newcomer Jason Dickerson, who was boosted to victory by a strong showing in his home county. He led the Cherokee County results with 71.6% to Shigley’s 28%, according to results from the Georgia Office of Secretary of State.

Shigley performed better in Fulton County and led with 54% of the vote compared to Dickerson’s 45%.

“Thank you, District 21. To our voters, our volunteers, and everyone who cheered us on through the campaign. The work goes on, and so does our belief in a better tomorrow,” Shigley said in conceding her loss.

The seat was formerly held by Brandon Beach, who won with 70% of the vote in 2024. He resigned to become U.S. Treasurer in the Trump administration.
