Seattle Port approves $399M airport expansion it says won’t use public funds

(The Center Square) – The Port of Seattle’s upcoming airport expansion project has been approved with a budget of $399 million.

Funding for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport expansion project stems from a combination of federal airport development funds and future revenue bonds. The port stated that no taxpayer dollars will be used to fund the project.

Plans call for the project to increase the existing 81,000-square-foot building into a 226,530-square-foot facility with a wish-list of amenities.

The project will add four floors to the C Concourse, which already has three floors. One floor is dedicated to office space. The other three are for customer service amenities, including restaurants, retail stores, lounge space, nursing room, outdoor viewing area and rooms dedicated to interfaith prayer and meditation. The C Concourse will also feature a performance area for live music for air travelers.

The design of the renovations are inspired by the Pacific Northwest’s natural landscape, according to the Seattle Port.

“The C Concourse Expansion project is key to establishing [Seattle-Tacoma International Airport]’s future as a five-star airport,” Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Managing Director Lance Lyttle said in a statement.

The C Concourse Expansion is part of the Seattle Port’s largest capital plan in its history at $5.3 billion over the next five years.

The airport will see $4.6 billion in capital funds go toward improvements at the terminal and concourses through the port’s SEA Gateway program and C Concourse Expansion and Baggage Modernization Project throughout the five-year capital spending plan.

Major construction on the project is set to begin in the first quarter of 2024. It is expected to be completed in 2026.
