Sen. Murray Warns Premiums Could Skyrocket Amid Shutdown

(AURN News) — Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., delivered remarks on the Senate floor Oct. 7, the seventh day of the government shutdown, regarding rising health care costs:

“This is not some distant crisis you can ignore. Premiums are being locked in right now. Letters are going out to families announcing shocking price increases this month.”

A new Kaiser Family Foundation report shows premiums could more than double — up to 114% — if the credits expire. An individual making $28,000 could see costs jump from $325 to more than $1,500 a year, while families in states such as West Virginia and Mississippi could face increases of over 300%.

Murray added: “To every Republican who keeps trying to say, ‘we can talk about this later.’ Later, is simply too late. ‘Oh, we can’t discuss health care while government is shut down.’ Well, you didn’t discuss it when government was open either.”
