(The Center Square) – The Shreveport Police Department says nearly all major crime categories have declined compared to the same period last year.
The department provides monthly updates to City Council members during their administrative conference meetings held the Monday prior to the board’s regular meeting.
The Police Department reports 23 shootings this year, which is a 58% decline over last year’s count of 55.
“As you can see, for quite a few years we’ve been experiencing a decline in our reported shootings,” said Wayne Smith, the city’s chief of police.
The city recorded a five-year high of 102 shootings in 2021.
This year, 90 sex crimes have been reported, a 12% decline; 261 burglaries mark a 14% decline; and 160 vehicle burglaries is a 28% reduction. There were 229 vehicle theft incidents which remain relatively unchanged over the previous year.
Homicides declined from 10 to four incidents so far in 2026. The city recorded a five-year high of 24 murders in 2023.
Kadarius Reed, 34, was killed in January near Mayfield Street. A suspect was charged with second-degree murder.
Morris Edwards, 46, was killed on Clanton Street in January. A police department spokesperson did not respond to The Center Square’s request for an update. It is unknown if this case is still under investigation or an arrest was made.
Zecorian Miller, 19, was shot and killed in the Cedar Grove neighborhood in early March. The status of the investigation is unknown.
Cameron Jones, 22, was killed on Mansfield Road on March 17. The shooter remained at the scene and claimed self-defense. It’s unclear if an arrest was made.
Only one category, armed robberies, reported an increase. There were 18 this year and 10 last year.
Vehicle crashes recorded a slight downturn but the volume remains elevated: 2,154 in 2026 compared to 2,183 in 2025. Vehicle fatalities also remain relatively unchanged. Seven people have lost their lives on Shreveport roadways this year.
“Vehicle crashes, this is one that sort of stays high on the radar. Seems like the chances are better that you would get hurt in an automobile crash than any other way,” Smith said.
