Shreveport Fire Department awarded grant for new rescue equipment

(The Center Square) – Shreveport Fire Department is set to receive a $28,958 grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation that will go to buy two rescue boats.

This week’s Shreveport City Council agenda shows a resolution authorizing the acceptance of a very substantial grant received by the Fire Department. Any donations over $10,000 require approval from the council.

The funding is being used to buy two Whaly 370 boats, two motors and two trailers with accessories that the department will use for water safety and rescue operations. The resolution cannot be adopted before Aug. 26.

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has awarded about $100 million to firefighters. Recent statistics from 2024 show they sent 393 sets of bunker gear, 276 thermal imaging cameras, 537 AEDS, 30 all-terrain vehicles, 85 extrication tools and 29 scholarships.

AED is an acronym for automated external defibrillator.

Other items on the agenda for Tuesday include authorizing an agreement between Shreveport and Grambling State University. The city’s contribution is $100,000, which was previously allocated by a budget ordinance.

The council will also hear various introductions for budget amendments, including the 2025 Airport Enterprise Fund Budget and 2025 Capital Improvements Budget. Appropriations for the Airport Enterprise Fund include decreasing the operating reserve by $1.38 million and increasing the transfer to capital by the same amount.

Ordinances for final passage include amending the 2025 Debt Service Fund budget and the 2025 Riverfront Development Special Revenue Fund budget.

Two properties are also on the agenda to be deemed surplus: 401 Texas St. and Fire Station No. 14.
