(AURN News) — Health care could get much more expensive next year. A new analysis from KFF finds that Affordable Care Act premiums could rise 114%, jumping from $888 to nearly $1,900 a year if Congress does not renew enhanced subsidies by year’s end.
About 22 million Americans currently rely on those tax credits to keep their insurance affordable.
Democrats say the subsidies must be extended now, especially with open enrollment beginning Nov. 1. Without action, millions could face sticker shock and even lose coverage.
Republicans say they may revisit the issue later, possibly with restrictions, but they do not want to tie it to the current funding fight that has already pushed the government into a shutdown.
The bottom line: health care bills could double unless lawmakers strike a deal.
