Summer road repairs begin in four Michigan counties

(The Center Square) – The Michigan Department of Transportation will begin four new road repair projects this week in Dickinson, Jackson, Marquette and Ontonagon counties.

The projects are all expected to be completed by the end of the summer, and officials say will support an estimated 2,022 jobs across the state.

All construction is covered by the taxpayer-funded Rebuilding Michigan plan, which represents a five-year $3.5 billion investment in transportation improvements. Additional funding is covered by the Building Michigan Together Plan, the largest infrastructure investment in Michigan state history.

Jackson County’s $162 million, I-94 road and bridge rebuilding project begins Tuesday will close the M-99 overpass and result in single-lane closures on I-94 under the bridge. This project will support the largest employment, with an estimated 1,960 jobs directly and indirectly supported.

In Dickinson County, MDOT will spend $2.2 million to rebuild M-95 from Hamilton to Woodward Avenue in the municipalities of Kingsford and Iron Mountain. The project began Monday and should be done in mid-August. Repairs, which will only be done in the daytime, include asphalt repairs, a concrete curb, a new gutter, a sidewalk and ramps, a water main, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and pavement markings. Northbound traffic will be maintained, while southbound will be redirected onto city streets.

In Ontonagon County, $1.9 million is going to replace a culvert on M-28 over Rolston Creek. Additional repairs include road reconstruction, ditch grading, sign installation, repairing erosion and painting pavement markings. Construction began Monday and is expected to be completed by Sept. 20. One lane of alternating traffic will remain on M-28 in the area during this time.

Marquette County began construction Monday on a $1 million resurfacing project along 2 miles of M-553, between Division Street and US-41. Additional work includes asphalt milling, sidewalk ramps, curbs and gutters and pavement markings. Single-lane closures are expected.
