Supreme Court Guts Medicaid Access to Planned Parenthood Services

A 6-3 Supreme Court ruling now allows states to block Medicaid funding from going to Planned Parenthood, even for basic health services such as cancer screenings and contraception.

The decision, authored by Justice Neil Gorsuch, doesn’t directly address — but it strikes at the core of health care access for low-income women, particularly in states like , where Gov. Henry McMaster has long sought to defund the provider.

The case centered on a woman with diabetes who relied on Planned Parenthood for birth control. But now, because the court says patients can’t sue under Medicaid’s freedom of choice clause, the door is open for states to pick your provider — not you.

Justice didn’t mince words, warning that the ruling strips away deeply personal freedom.

This won’t shut clinics down, but it will push them further to the margins — and push vulnerable patients with them.
