Tallahassee Golf Course Built Over Enslaved Graves Sparks Outrage

(AURN News) — A proposal to sell a Tallahassee golf course built over the graves of enslaved people has ignited public outrage.

The Capital City Country Club, once part of a plantation, sits on city-owned land where archaeologists confirmed 23 graves and identified 14 possible burial sites near the seventh hole.

Since 1956, the club has leased the 178-acre property from the city for $1 a year — a deal made after desegregation.

Although city officials promised a memorial in 2021, none has been built. The city is now considering selling the land to the club for $1.25 million.

According to The New York Times, residents packed City Hall, demanding that the sale be stopped.
