This Day in History: Lionel Richie Born June 20, 1949

was born June 20, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Today, he turns 76 and continues to reach new audiences as a judge on “American Idol.”

Richie is one of the world’s most successful singers, composers and record producers, with more than 100 million records sold worldwide.

He first rose to fame as the lead singer of , a group that signed with Atlantic Records in 1968 and delivered classics such as “Brick House” and “Machine Gun.” His smooth voice became synonymous with romantic ballads including “Easy” and “Three Times a Lady.”

By the late 1970s, Richie began writing for other artists and launched a blockbuster solo career in the 1980s, solidifying his place among ‘s all-time greats.
