This Day in History: Michael Jackson Dies at 50

On June 25, 2009, the world lost one of its most iconic entertainers — .

Jackson began his path to stardom at the tender age of five as the lead singer of his family band, The Jackson 5. Known as the “King of Pop,” he transformed music, dance and pop culture with groundbreaking hits like “Thriller,” “Billie Jean” and “Beat It.”

His sudden at age 50 shocked millions and sparked a global outpouring of grief.

He died in of cardiac arrest caused by acute propofol intoxication; Dr. Conrad Murray, his personal physician, was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Tributes poured in from fans, celebrities and world leaders alike, cementing his legacy as a once-in-a-generation artist whose impact still echoes more than a decade later.
